Stretching is an important part of any exercise regimen. The primary benefits include improved flexibility and helping to decrease in the reduction of injuries from activities. Improved flexibility will help you have better range of motion in your joints, which can help decrease the risk of injuries by helping your joints move through the full range of motion. Stretching also helps increase blood flow to the muscle, which can help decrease soreness from working out. Most people enjoy stretching and are aware of the benefits. However, one of the main questions we get is when to stretch, before or after a workout?
Static vs Dynamic Stretching
The two main types of stretching are static and dynamic. A static stretch is when you hold a stretch for 30 seconds or more, such as reaching down and grabbing your toes. A dynamic stretch is when you incorporate movements, such as hip circles, walking lunges, and butt kicks.
When to Stretch
So, when should you stretch? For best results, dynamic stretches should be done before a workout. For example, this would include doing walking lunges before running on the treadmill. Static stretches should be performed after a workout. For example, this would include toe touches after a leg workout. Static stretching after a workout can help decrease soreness and also provides a nice post-workout ritual.
